Basilisk

Some friends bought a Harry Potter advent calendar for work. Each day in December they would open a door and find a new Harry Potter figurine. They wanted to continue enjoying it in the new year so I suggested that I make new figures to go behind the doors. So I kinda signed myself up to design 24 Harry Potter figurines :/ We’ll see how we go.

This pattern is written in American crochet notation. It uses a 2mm and 4 ply wool. Make the basilisk whatever colour you like. I like green 🙂

Head

Round 1: 4 sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)

Round 2: increase in every stitch (8 stitches)

Rounds 3 – 5: sc in each stitch (8 stitches) (3 rounds)

Round 6: decease the first two stitches together, sc in the next stitch – repeat (5 stitches)

Body

Round 7: chain 4, slip stitch into the stitch 3 behind the stitch the chain originates from

Rounds 8 – 9: sc in each stitch (6 stitches) (2 rounds)

Round 10: sc in each stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (9 stitches)

Rounds 11 – 19: sc in each stitch (9 stitches) (9 rounds)

Stuff this bit

Round 20: chain 7, slip stitch into the stitch 3 behind the stitch the chain originates from

Rounds 21 – 22: sc in each stitch (9 stitches) (2 rounds)

Round 23: sc in the first two stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (12 stitches)

Rounds 24 – 73: sc in each stitch (12 stitches) (50 rounds)

Round 74: sc in the first two stitches, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (9 stitches)

Rounds 75 – 89: sc in each stitch (9 stitches) (15 rounds)

Round 90: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (6 stitches)

Rounds 91 – 100: sc in each stitch (6 stitches) (10 rounds)

Round 101: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (4 stitches)

Rounds 102 – 104: sc in each stitch (4 stitches) (3 rounds)

Fasten off, weave in end.

Close both the holes by attaching the wool and decreasing until the hole closes.

Sew the basilisk in to whatever pose you like. I chose to have him curled with his tail up, like a rattlesnake 🙂

Now, embroider the sparkly eyes and a smiley face. If you like you could add fangs and a forked tongue.

One fun thing is when you press back on his head he rears back at you like he’s striking 🙂
