Here is a bookmark that looks like the spine of a Commonwealth Law Report.
It is made with brown, yellow, black and red 4 ply wool and a 2 mm hook. The pattern is written in American crochet notation.
With brown wool
Chain 13 (one is a turning chain)
Row 1: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)
Change to yellow wool
Row 2: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)
Change to brown wool
Rows 3 – 13: sc in each stitch (12 stitches) (11 rows)
Change to yellow wool
Row 14: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)
Change to black wool
Rows 15 – 20: sc in each stitch (12 stitches) (6 rows)
Change to yellow wool
Row 21: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)
Change to brown wool
Rows 22 – 30: sc in each stitch (12 stitches) (9 rows)
Change to yellow wool
Row 31: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)
Change to red wool
Row 32 – 38: sc in each stitch (12 stitches) (7 rows)
Change to yellow wool
Row 39: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)
Change to brown wool
Row 40 – 46: sc in each stitch (12 stitches) (7 rows)
Change to yellow wool
Row 47: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)
Change to brown wool
Row 48: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)
Fasten off, weave in ends.
